THRUSH HOLMES at ZONA MACO, MEXICO CITY

Press release available only in original language.

We are thrilled to be participating in the 15th edition of Zona Maco, #mexicocity, exhibiting a solo presentation by Canadian artist #thrushholmes, whose work can be found in permanent collections such as the Elton John Aids Foundation, Sony, Dreamworks, and Def Jam Records among others. The artist's work has been extensively exhibited in both Canada and the United States, and we are proud to be exhibiting his work in Mexico for the first time. He has been represented by BEERS since 2016, participating both two-person and group shows at the gallery, including a 2016 exhibition with Jonathan Lux, and a solo presentation at PULSE Miami in 2016. Holmes will have his first solo exhibition at the gallery in 2019.

Thrush Holmes' practice navigates grandiose concepts of biography, introspection, and materiality through a unique and unapologetic approach (glaring bright neon lights; highly toxic driveway sealant) to transform the 'still life' to an almost cult-like or fetishistic object. In addition, Holmes' vibrant and colorful paintings reveal eccentric florals and audacious female silhouettes set within illuminated prose almost bursting with energy and movement on the canvas. His work evokes an entirely new visual language, a hybrid heavily indebted to old traditions on one end but somehow liberated by new contemporary modes and traditions on the other.
