Summer break comes to an end: Last weekend, the #dtm entered the second half of the season in Moscow – and not without talking points. Next weekend, it’s the return of Formula 1 with a visit to the legendary Ardennes rollercoaster at Spa-Francorchamps.
This is what happened: Weekend’s results & facts
News snippets
Torrid encounter: A defective power steering system, a car limping along after a collision and an attack successfully fended off in the final metres – Robert Wickens had to muster all his skills in the second race on the Moscow Raceway to bring his SILBERPFEIL Energy #mercedesamg C 63 #dtm home in fifth position. The dogged commitment paid off in the end, as the Canadian consolidated second position in the title chase, with only three more race weekends left in the season. The last time that a #mercedesamg #dtm driver nursed a car with defective power steering to the finish line was Pascal Wehrlein in Race 1 at Oschersleben in 2015. Wehrlein also took the chequered flag in fifth position on that occasion – and then went on to win the championship!
Milestones in Moscow: The #dtm reported back for duty in Moscow after the summer break. And in spectacular fashion! In rainy conditions, the first four places in Saturday’s race went to #mercedesamg #dtm drivers. Some personal records were also set on this sixth race weekend of the season, for example, #dtm rookie #felixrosenqvist finishing tenth and just inside the points on his series debut. “That was the icing on the cake, so to speak,” said Head of #mercedesamg #dtm Ulrich Fritz, acknowledging the performance of his Swedish recruit. Two more personal bests were set by Maximilian Götz in Saturday’s race, starting from fourth on the grid and also finishing fourth – his best qualifying and also his best race result in the #dtm to date.
Victory for HARIBO #racing Team-AMG in the VLN: Almost three months after registering a historic quadruple victory in the 24-hour race, the new #mercedesamg #gt3 claimed its latest success on the famous Nordschleife of the Nürburgring. Uwe Alzen, Lance David Arnold and Jan Seyffarth secured first place for HARIBO #racing Team-AMG in the 39th RCM DMV Grenzland Race which forms part of the VLN endurance championship. By the end of an exciting contest in which the lead changed hands nine times, the trio had built up a substantial lead. Uwe Alzen driving the final stint in the #mercedesamg #gt3 with the number eight on its bodywork drove a masterful final lap to take the flag twelve seconds ahead of the second-placed car. The number 6 BLACK FALCON #mercedesamg #gt3 driven by Abdulaziz Al Faisal, Yelmer Buurman, Adam Christodoulou and Gerwin Schuring made it a good day all round for the brand with their sixth-place finish.
Third in the ADAC GT Masters in Zandvoort: In Sunday’s race, the second of two on the weekend, defending ADAC GT Masters champions Sebastian Asch and Luca Ludwig crossed the finish line at the Circuit Park Zandvoort in third place, just 2.197 seconds behind the winners. A brief downpour around 15 minutes after the start brought out the safety car. AMG Team ZAKSPEED seized the opportunity to switch to rain tyres while many of the leading group persisted on slicks. With the safety car still leading the field, Ludwig was able to close the gap and, thanks to the choice of tyres, join the race leaders within a few laps. Following the mandatory change of drivers halfway through the race and a switch back to slicks, Asch slotted into third, a position he maintained through to the finish. The title holders go into the last race weekend of the 2016 ADAC GT Masters at Hockenheim (1st - 2nd October) in fourth place, 42 points adrift of the current leaders. AMG Team ZAKSPEED are placed third in the team standings with a deficit of 16 points.
Three questions for Felix Rosenqvist
Felix, your first #dtm race weekend is now behind you. How did it go?
Felix Rosenqvist: “It was really terrific. Finishing in the points in my first #dtm race was way more than I ever expected. The speed was there right from the start. I’ve heard that only two drivers before me have ever managed to score points like that since the entry of BMW, and certainly no one from Mercedes. That obviously makes me proud. Nevertheless, I must also say that it’s really incredibly difficult to race up front in the #dtm. I noticed that on Sunday. The standard of all the drivers is incredibly high.” < /p>
What have you got to say about Marco Wittman’s complaint that you blocked him?
Felix Rosenqvist: “I’ve already said what I think in a TV interview. It’s absolutely ridiculous. You’ve only got to take an objective look at the data. On the lap where Marco says I blocked him, I was on my fastest outlap of the weekend, and there was more than one second between us at the end of the lap. All my sectors were green after that. Besides, there wasn’t even an investigation by the race control, and Marco was on pole. Qualifying has generally been much closer in the other series, in which I’ve previously competed, and no one ever complained.”
Is there any news about your status for the Nürburgring?
Felix Rosenqvist: “Yes, there is. We sat down together after the race weekend, and Uli Fritz told me that I will be driving again at the Nürburgring. I’m really pleased about that. I can hardly wait and hope that I can repeat my performance from Moscow again in the Eiffel.”
