MXGP - KTM Racing, Jeffrey Herlings remains undefeated after 1-1 in Mexico

Jeffrey Herlings won his first #moto by 28 seconds and his second by 44 seconds. In the second #moto he lapped up to place eleven and continually set one fastest lap after another as the race progressed. It was his first win on this circuit since a GP victory in 2012. In 2014 he raced here to 11th place riding with a fractured femur, and in 2015 he missed the round because of injury. As a rider who has long been considered probably the best on sand in the world, Herlings has now underlined he can be equally good on any surface. On Sunday in #mexico he never looked challenged.

Herlings’ #mx2 factory teammate Pauls Jonass has excellent starts in both #mx2 motos but had his share of bad luck on the Mexican circuit. In his first #moto he hit a rut after some very fast opening laps and lost his rear brake and had to ride out the rest of the race without brakes. Then in the second race, he was tagged by another rider and crashed out, dropping from third to tenth before regrouping to go on the attack. He then fought back hard and fast to regain ground in both races, wrapping up his day with a 4-4 result and fourth overall to miss the podium third by a single point.

Jonass: “The whole weekend I was ready to do a good race. The speed was there and I was convinced I could get good results. Then in the first heat I crashed and then had problems with the brakes for the rest of the race. I got a very good start again in the second #moto but I came in contact with another rider and crashed. I fought back hard again, and I had very good speed to finish in the top five. Of course I am still very confident because I know I can give much more than I did so far, I just need a bit more luck. Now I’m looking forward to the next race in Latvia because it’s my home race and it will be great to be #racing in front of all my fans.”

Davy Pootjes, the youngest member of the factory #mx2 trio finished 15-15 for overall 15th on this challenging and very technical hard pack surface. He admitted that he had struggled both mentally and physically with the track and the race in conditions that were both hot and at an altitude higher than most riders are accustomed to. “It was really tough for me but I’m going to train hard in the next couple of weeks and come back strong. The next race is Latvia and on sand and I like it there.” The factory team’s three #mx2 riders compete on KTM 250 SX-F race bikes.

The #mexico outing was unfortunately not as successful for the Red Bull KTM Factory #racing #mxgp duo as they might have wished. Tony Cairoli finished his day with a 6-9 result for over sixth and #mxgp factory teammate Glenn Coldenhoff scored a 10-10 for overall eleventh on the KTM #450sxf.

Cairoli, who has been working his way back from injury at the start of the season, said later that it had been a difficult weekend and one ‘to forget’. “I didn’t feel so good all weekend. The track is very difficult compared to last week (in Argentina) when I was feeling comfortable, and better than I had before that. I had a very bad start in the first #moto, but I came back to sixth, which was not so bad, but for sure not what I expected. The second #moto was really not good. The riding was not how I wanted it, there were a lot of mistakes and also another bad start. It was just a weekend to forget. Hopefully we can be stronger and stronger over the next two weeks. I want to be in good shape and in the mood to attack for Latvia because that’s a track I like a lot.”  Cairoli remains third in the championship points behind Romain Febvre and Tim Gajser, who finished 2-1 here in #mexico.

Coldenhoff said he had also been hoping to do better this weekend. “We were for sure wanting more. For me it was a pretty disappointing weekend because I actually felt good yesterday and I got some good confidence for today, but it turned out I didn’t have the speed. I struggled a bit in the middle of the first #moto and by the end of it I was already a bit better. I had a good start in the second #moto, but then I’m not sure what happened. I am off the pace of the other guys so I have some work to do.”

Riders and teams have now completed this series of early overseas races that launch the season and now take a break before #racing resumes back in Europe at the beginning of May.
