When it comes to holiday gift giving, it may be the thought that counts, but you still need to make sure it gets there – safely and on time!

According to the National Retail Federation forecast, holiday sales are expected to increase 3.7 percent to $630.5 billion, with online sales rising between 6 and 8 percent to as much as $105 billion. And as shoppers continue checking off their lists, #fedex is forecasting a record-breaking 317 million packages to ship this holiday season.

To help ensure the security of your packages, #fedex recommends the following tips for both senders and recipients:

• Tip 1: Customize your deliveries. Sign up for FedEx's free #fedex Delivery Manager and keep track of packages headed your way.
• Tip 2: Consider an alternate destination. When you order something online, consider sending the package to your workplace, or to someone whom you know will be there to receive it.
• Tip 3: Send it to a #fedex Office location. You can have your deliveries sent to the nearest #fedex Office location and we'll hold it for you for up to five days.
• Tip 4: Request a signature. If you're shipping something of high value – or you just want to be sure items aren't left unattended – you can require a signature for packages to be released.
• Tip 5: Request a vacation hold. Taking a holiday trip to visit Grandma? You can request a vacation hold on all shipments for up to 14 days.
• Tip 6: Reroute your packages even when they're already on the way. With #fedex Delivery Manager, you'll be alerted to every #fedex package headed to your home, even if you don't have the tracking number. If you know you won't be home just redirect the delivery to a secure location.
• Tip 7: Leave delivery instructions. Do you like your packages left behind the big planter, or tucked behind the grill beside the back door? Leave instructions for where you want your deliveries.
