Montblanc Cutting Edge Art Collection at the St Moritz Art Masters

Montblanc returns to the St Moritz Art Masters, the international arts and culture festival that takes place in and around the idyllic Swiss mountain town from 21st August to 30th August 2015. Visitors to the annual international event will be invited to discover works from the Montblanc Cutting Edge Art Collection while participating in the “Walk of Art”, a route that takes art enthusiasts on a journey of artistic discovery around different exhibition locations throughout the Engadin.

The 8th edition of the St Moritz Art Masters brings art lovers and leading international collectors to the Engadin region to celebrate the best of Italian art. Exhibitions, workshops, meetings and lectures will illustrate the ways in which the history of Italian creativity has influenced cultural developments in Europe and the rest of the world throughout the twentieth century.

Reflecting the 2015 St Moritz Art Masters’ focus on Italy and its artistic legacy, Montblanc has selected three works from its collection created by Italian artists. Works by Monica Bonvicini, Piero Golia and Luca Trevisani, each one a unique piece of commissioned art from the Montblanc Cutting Edge Art Collection, will be exhibited at the Galerie Bruno Bischofsberger during the festival.

Since 2002, Montblanc has been building a diverse collection comprising of over 200 works by 170 internationally renowned contemporary artists, each invited to individually and artistically interpret the world-famous Montblanc emblem with their own visual vocabulary. While many of these artists were at the beginning of their careers at the time when Montblanc assigned them, they are today among the most famous international artists including Jean Marc Bustamante, Thomas Demand, Fang Lijun, Stephan Huber, Jonathan Meese, Jorge Pardo, Daniel Pflumm and Sylvie Fleury. The works by Monica Bonvicini, Piero Golia and Luca Trevisani are part of this diverse group of artistic visionaries who have incorporated the Montblanc emblem in a surprising and creative way.

“With a heritage deeply anchored in the culture of writing, one of the most components of human civilization, Montblanc has always supported arts and culture,” explains Jérôme Lambert, CEO Montblanc. “We believe in the importance of making the works of talented artists accessible to audiences worldwide to enjoy and be inspired by. As part of our ongoing commitment to the arts, we are delighted to be participating in this unique event, giving visitors an opportunity to experience pieces by artists the Montblanc Cultural Foundation has proudly supported over the years, in an extraordinary setting.”

While the three works are by Italian artists reflecting the theme of the St Moritz Art Masters, each work presented has its own distinctive identity and artistic character. A provocative chainmail mural installation by Monica Bonvicini makes use of the fetishistic side of materials originating from the construction industry, including steel, chains and leather, to create an imposing interpretation of male power. Piero Golia work “Notturno” seeks to convince the viewer of a new reality: it shows a manipulated photograph of a seascape that is lit by several suns, as if it were a planet out of Isaac Asimov’s influential science fiction short story “Nightfall”, with one of the rising suns taking on the shape of the Montblanc emblem. Using filigree made from everyday materials, “\/\/\/\/,” by Luca Trevisani is an elegant composition of layovers, using the Montblanc emblem cut from leather from the Montblanc Pelleteria. The effect is mesmerising invitation into the artist’s vision of the world.
