Daniel Spoerri
'Eat Art in transformation' at m.a.x. museo, Chiasso (Switzerland)

Daniel Spoerri (1930) is the founder, among other things, of “Eat Art”, a term coined in 1967 to launch a critical study of the basic principles of nutrition in relation to humanity’s spiritual values. Through the assemblages that characterize his tableaux-pièges or “snare paintings”, Spoerri has developed a poetic that illustrates humanity’s continuous attraction to the all-important theme of food, seen as a key interface between art and life, between art and vital energy. This is one of the issues addressed by Expo Milano 2015 “Feed the Planet, Energy for Life”.
Well-known internationally, Daniel Spoerri’s artworks are represented in major collections of contemporary art, including the MoMA, New York, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney, and the mumok in Vienna.
During the first four months of Expo Milano 2015 the m.a.x. museo in Chiasso (Canton Ticino) will be presenting a related exhibition titled “Daniel Spoerri. Eat Art in Transformation” curated by Susanne Bieri, Antonio d’Avossa and Nicoletta Ossanna Cavadini.
For the occasion, there will be 200 works, including prints, posters, announcements, menus, sculptures and assemblages from the artist’s own collection and that of the Swiss National Library in Bern – which prepared the exhibition project in partnership with the m.a.x. museo – as well as from other Swiss museums and important Swiss, Italian, German and Austrian private collectors.
The exhibition is co-produced with the Galleria Civica di Modena and the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Modena, where it will be presented with an integrated project at the two locations of Palazzo Santa Margherita and the Palazzina dei Giardini from Saturday, 10 October 2015 (also the day of the inauguration, coinciding with Contemporary Art Day promoted by the AMACI- Association of Museums of Contemporary Art and the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities) on Sunday, 31 January 2016.
