ELLE wins the 2017 Cristalplant Dutch Design Contest
Andrea Balzano & #gianlucacarraro – Biography
After graduating with degrees in Industrial #design from the Polytechnic University of Milan and after several professional experiences based on architecture and #design studies, #andreabalzano and #gianlucacarraro combined their skills in 2013 to establish the Balzano/Carraro #design Studio in Milan. The collaboration was born with the intent of combining attention to detail and the search for quality with the technical expertise and keen creative sensibility that distinguishes them, pursuing the shared objective of creating works which are concise, linear and functional.
Andrea Bolzano graduated with a degree in Industrial #design from the Politecnico di Milano (Polytechnic University of Milan) in 2011. During his final academic year, he flew to Japan to live and study at the Kyushu University in Fukuoka - a formative experience that lasted six months and which fascinated and inspired him greatly. Immediately after obtaining his degree, he started working for various architecture and #design studios, including PS+A Palomba-Serafini Associati, and several advertising agencies, including Saatchi&Saatchi. Thus began his professional career which, to this day, sees him involved in a very fruitful collaboration with Chiara Andreatti and her studio.
Gianluca Carraro graduated from the #design Department of the Polytechnic University of Milan in 2012. During his final year of university, he began collaborating with the Arches architecture studio in Milan, with whom he developed several #interiordesign and domotics projects. In 2013, he began a long-lasting collaboration with Sergio Brioschi and with the studio of architect Antonio Citterio. For Gianluca, these were years of significant professional growth, as he realized numerous #interiordesign products and exhibition spaces for important brands such as Arclinea, Pozzi Ginori, Arflex Japan, Jesse and Irsap.
Elle, the project that won at the 2017 #cristalplant Dutch #design Contest
Elle, the project presented by #andreabalzano and #gianlucacarraro, won the 2017 #cristalplant Dutch #design #contest. “Essential #design that focuses on functionality, an aesthetic quality that perfectly captures Tortu's style,” declared Gijs Vrind, CEO of the Dutch partner company. The project proposed by the Balzano-Carraro duo received top marks and the unanimous approval of the jury.
“Elle was conceived with the precise intention of creating a form which explicates its function as explicitly as possible. We started from this idea, sketching out on a piece of paper the minimal forms that would be needed. A few lines to support the objects and contain the water,” said #andreabalzano. “The next step was to enclose everything in a concise form,” #gianlucacarraro went on to explain. “It's a minimalist project which combines soft details and hard edges into something that becomes complex but also pleasurable to look at and touch,” concluded Carraro.
Elle fully reflects the modus operandi of the two Milanese designers, a style which comes very close to the lines that characterize the aesthetic projects of the Dutch company Tortu: an extremely modular form, composed of a shelf and a basin that can be extended or reduced at will to obtain a small washbasin, a large double sink or a tall sculptural form. It can either be placed on a surface or attached to a wall.
