JORN+MUNCH
Magnificent meeting between two Nordic masters

Jorn+Munch is the sixth and final exhibition in the series +Munch. In this exhibition two Nordic master painters meet each other for the first time, in a way that explores the artistic relationship between #asgerjorn (Danish, 1914-1973) and #edvardmunch on a painterly, thematic and conceptual plan. The exhibition offers an opportunity to become better acquainted with Munch's later works, and how he came to influence Jorn’s exploration of the painting as an artistic medium.

Asger Jorn was uncompromising and ambitious on behalf of the importance of art. In keeping with the avant-garde ideas he felt art should challenge conventions and help develop humans and society. #edvardmunch became a key figure for Jorn in this project.

In Jorn+Munch we follow Jorn from his immediate response to Munch's art, through his reflections on Munch's artistry and it´s place in art history, towards what Jorn called "the liberation of the color." In Jorn´s opinion this was about finding a free painterly expression through the use of color and brush strokes, which was detached from the images literary content and the drawn line - an expression that was perceived as relevant at Jorn´s time. In Jorn´s spontaneous and free paintings one can see the 1950s and '60s optimism and faith in another and the belief in a free world. You can read more about the exhibition here.
