Townley fights back in Lombardia MxGp qualifier

Team #suzuki Press Office – June 25.

The first day of the Fullback Grand Prix of #lombardia saw Team #suzuki World MXGP’s #bentownley make a hard fight back to gain 12th position in the Qualification Heat at Mantova.

The New Zealander was involved in a slip on the opening corner of the 20- minute and two-lap sprint to decide slots in the start gate for the two motos of the 12th round of 18 in the 2016 FIM Motocross World Championship tomorrow. The ‘8’ gunned his RM-Z450 back from last place in a determined charge across the hard-packed sand in Italy.

A generous gathering of spectators at Mantova sweated in heat and humidity and a climate over 30 degrees for a sharp contrast to the cloudy and showery conditions witnessed at the British Grand Prix last weekend. The sunshine meant a rough, hard and often slippery terrain around the compact layout.

Townley improved from 15th to 10th positions in the Free and Timed Practice sessions and then had an excellent start in the Heat race to be among the leaders entering the first turn. ‘BT’ was down before hitting the apex of the tight left-hander and then had to rally back through a full 40-rider field to earn his classification.

Team #suzuki World MX2 watched Jeremy Seewer capture fourth place on the factory RM-Z250. The Swiss miscued his launch from the gate for the MX2 qualifier and was another who had to work for the duration of the race to regain time from outside the top 10. Team-mate Brian Hsu hit into a fallen rider on the second turn and had to return from the nether-regions of the pack. The German rose to 27th.

Saturday afternoon also saw the first outing for the EMX250 European Championship and Bas Vaessen took his RM-Z250 to a promising third position as the Dutchman chases another overall podium trophy in 2016.

Ben Townley:

“We have our base-setting here from Matterley and we made some progress and it was a pretty decent day for me. I just cannot seem to avoid chaos at the moment. I had a really good start going and I don't know what happened. I know I didn't crash and I didn't hit anybody so someone must have nudged me from behind. I had to salvage what I could.”

Jeremy Seewer:

“It is a bit of a shock to change from cold and rain to heat and humidity. I’m pretty fit and normally it is still hard to get used to it…but everybody has to cope with the conditions. I’m happy with my riding and the speed is really good again. I ‘missed’ the start and I know we have to work on it but I think it will be better tomorrow. It is not about the bike it is about myself doing something stupid. If I can get rid of that then I’m confident of being up there with the guys for the podium tomorrow.”
