Rüsselsheim.  #opel will showcase its confidence, its passion for the automobile and its vision for the sportscar of the future at the 86th Geneva International Motor Show (March 3 to 13, 2016) with the world premiere of the GT #concept – a direct descendant of the Experimental GT, which was the first ever #concept car presented by a European car manufacturer in 1965. Furthermore, the Rüsselsheim-based carmaker will reveal the new #mokkax to the public. The new sub-compact SUV aims to continue the success of its predecessor with an even more desirable exterior and interior design and a state-of-the-art connected infotainment offering. The new #astra will also take center stage on the #opel stand in Hall 2 of the Palexpo (stand number 2231). Opel’s compact class star will not only demonstrate its everyday suitability but also its sporting credentials with the #astratcr celebrating its international debut. #opel Group CEO Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann will unveil all of the news during the #opel press conference that will take place at 11:00CET on March 1.

“Our Geneva stars highlight exactly what #opel is today. The GT #concept shows that we are innovative and have a clear vision of where we are going. The new #astra and the new #mokkax show that we listen to our customers and put them at the center of everything we do by building cars that are desirable and affordable. And the #astratcr shows that we are embracing our motorsports heritage with all its emotional connotations,” said #opel Group CEO Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann.

GT #concept: Puristic sportscar of the future

2016 is an important year in Opel’s 154-year long history on its way to the biggest turnaround on automotive record. Sales figures are up and the company shows its commitment to an exciting future with its vision for an approachable sportscar– with the GT #concept that will most definitely be one of the highlights of the Geneva Motor Show. The GT #concept has everything it needs to appeal to car enthusiasts of all age groups. The thoroughbred athlete with a front mid-engine and rear-wheel drive is a direct descendant of the #opelgt from the sixties and the seventies and the Monza #concept that was presented in Frankfurt in 2013. It takes Opel’s sculptural design philosophy to the next level. The sportscar is avant-garde yet puristic, renounces everything that disturbs the pure form. The GT #concept has no door handles or exterior door mirrors, and no superfluous decorative elements. It is a dynamic driving machine, something that is already symbolized by its typical sports car proportions with a long bonnet and ultra-short overhangs as well as the bold red signature line that graphically splits the vehicle body horizontally. The absence of a trunk lid, the intriguing and innovative door design, the central dual exhaust, the looks of the steering wheel and of course, the name all refer to the original GT. However, the GT #concept does not simply mime its ancestor: it re-invents the innovative, daring and exciting spirit of the original GT without any nostalgia or sign of retro-design.

Created as a popular sports car – not an elusive super-car, the #opelgt #concept has a powerful 1.0-liter, three-cylinder turbocharged front mid-engine. The extremely efficient direct injection gasoline unit developed from the powertrain known from the ADAM, the Corsa and the new #astra delivers 107 kW/145 hp and maximum torque of 205 Nm in its sporty trim (consumption values for the #opelgt #concept are not available yet). The turbo power is sent towards the rear axle with mechanical differential lock via a sequential six-speed transmission that is operated by shift paddles on the steering wheel. The two-seater with a total weight below 1,000 kilograms accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in less than eight seconds and has a top speed of 215 km/h.

Adventurous and bold with outstanding connectivity – The new Mokka X

In addition to the GT #concept, #opel will present another world premiere in Geneva in the new #mokkax that will hit the market in the fall of 2016. The Mokka has enjoyed great success since its launch three years ago and has already been ordered over 500,000 times. To ensure that the #mokkax continues the success story, #opel has given its sub-compact SUV a comprehensive overhaul – and a new name, with the X depicting its adventurous character as it will do for all future #opel SUVs and CUVs.

The Mokka X’ new exterior design displays a bold attitude. Its new front look is aligned with Opel’s new look including a wing-shaped horizontal front grille and the dominant, sharp double wing signature of the LED daytime running lights. The front fascia also gets more precisely and elegantly sculpted surfaces, with less plastic inserts. This gives the #mokkax a wider, more solid and masculine stance. It is continued at the rear with another double wing light signature also featured in the LED tail lamps. The body side retains its sculpted and elegant traits and sporty edge with muscular and athletic lower body lines, energized by Opel’s typical ‘blade’ that sweeps upwards to the rear.

On the inside, the Mokka X’ ambiance has been totally redefined with a completely new dashboard making its debut. The new instrument panel is organized around more horizontally shaped elements. It looks both simpler and purer, as well as sharper and more precise in its execution. The center stack has been redeveloped completely with the 7- and 8-inch touchscreens of the new generation infotainment systems taking center stage. Overall, the interior now impresses with refined elegance and a purer design with less buttons – many functions are now accessible via the capacitive touchscreens.

For sure, the #mokkax will be one of the best-connected vehicles in its class. Two versions of the new generation of the IntelliLink infotainment system will bring the world of smartphones to the #mokkax via both Apple CarPlay and Android #auto phone projection. In addition, #opel OnStar – already launched in 13 European countries and extended to 16 more countries in 2016 - will also be available in the Mokka X’ from its launch. The connectivity and service assistant puts a guardian angel in each car. In addition, it turns the #mokkax into a powerful 4G LTE Wi-Fi Hotspot (service currently available in Germany, the UK, the Netherlands and Spain, more to come in the course of the year).

Under the hood, the new generation 112 kW/152 hp 1.4-liter Direct Injection Turbo will be available in combination with a six-speed automatic transmission, Start/Stop and adaptive all-wheel drive (CO2 emissions and fuel consumption combined according to preliminary data: 154 g/km, 6.6 l/100 km).

Elsewhere, the engineers have once again followed Opel’s strategy of making innovative technology available to a broad group of buyers by introducing Adaptive Forward Lighting LED headlamps. The new AFL LED system adapts the headlights lighting patterns automatically to the driving situation, providing the best possible light performance without glaring other drivers. In total, the new system features nine different functions/lighting patterns.

Light, efficient, practical and exciting: The new #opel Astra

Lighter, more frugal and agile while offering even greater comfort – the customers have already been convinced by the virtues proposed by the new #astra and the new #astrasportstourer with orders already having surpassed 100,000. It reflects efficiency with every component. The five-door variant is up to 200 kilograms and the Sports Tourer up to 190 kilograms lighter than the outgoing model. The massive weight reduction results significantly improve agility and fuel economy.

The #astra powertrain line-up also plays a big role in this enhanced driving experience: each new #astra features a member of Opel’s completely new engine portfolio. The gasoline and diesel engines with a displacement of up to 1.6 liters all combine highest efficiency with excellent responsiveness. In Geneva, a new two-stage turbocharged top-of-the-range diesel will make its debut. The 1.6 BiTurbo CDTI has an output of 118 kW/160 hp and delivers maximum torque of 350 Nm. In combination with six-speed manual transmission, Start/Stop and low-rolling resistance tires, it cuts fuel consumption of the Sports Tourer to 4.1 liters of diesel per 100 kilometers (109 grams of CO2 per kilometer – 108 grams in the five-door sedan).

Both the five-door and the Sports Tourer variant can also boast increased interior spaciousness despite the exterior dimensions have been reduced (five-door) or maintained (Sports Tourer) with especially the rear-seat passengers enjoying 35 millimeters and 28 millimeters more legroom respectively. In addition, the #astrasportstourer can carry more luggage than before – now up to 1,630 liters, 80 liters more than its predecessor can. The extensive load area is also easier to access than ever before thanks to the new power tailgate that can be opened and shut with a simple kicking motion under the bumper.

In addition to the five-door and Sports Tourer, #opel will also present the new #astratcr racecar to an international audience for the very first time in Geneva. A strong 2.0-liter turbocharged engine that will deliver 330 hp and maximum torque of 420 Nm powers the new touring car racer from Rüsselsheim. This power is transferred to the front wheels via a twin-disc sinter metal clutch and a sequential, six-speed racing transmission with the paddle shift located on the steering wheel. An automated double declutching system creates stability when down-shifting. 378 mm brake discs and 6-piston brake calipers at the front along with 265 mm brake discs and 2-piston brake calipers at the rear provide the necessary stopping power. The driver can modulate the braking balance from the cockpit. The car will make its racing debut in several TCR championships in the hands of client motorsport teams in 2016.
